Peter de Been is a legendary martial artist and a true pioneer who fundamentally reshaped the landscape of combat sports in Australasia. He secured his place in history as the first non-Brazilian to earn a black belt directly out of Brazil’s elite academy system under Master Carlos Gracie Jr.As the founder of both Australia's first dedicated Jiu-Jitsu academy in 1993 and the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (AFBJJ) in 1994, he engineered the entire competitive and educational framework for the sport nationwide. Now a revered 6th-degree black belt with over three decades of international competitive success, de Been continues to lead from the front out of his flagship St Kilda headquarters, mentoring the next generation and expanding a global legacy that spans over 150 black belts.
